Step 28: Now, at this step I decide to work more on character and background detailing process. At this step, I start to detailing Santa character face. I used my basic colors I got from Step 4 again. I also use the burn tool. Now you get the colors for the skin’s highlights. I choose the yelow and oranges color for the light color of face. I deepened the shadows by adding some darker yellow and light red and orange colors. For the brushes, I used the same brush from step 5. Also I am using a hard brush with it’s opacity set to pressure with a low flow. I shaded his face by painting different size brushes with a low flow pressure. Now, I can say it is very important where the light sources are at this step.
Step 29: Once the lighting was established with the character we will work on the background light and green again. Open a new layer for the colorful light and the other one is for the green tree leafs. Now, arrange lights in this shape. And name the layer as New Light. Then make a copy of this new layer.
Step 30: Select your new copy layer and then go to Effect>Blur>Gaussian Blur. In the Gaussian Blur dialog, set the Radius to 20,5 and click OK. This will provide the glow effect for the second lights at the background.
Step 31: And now arrange the brightness of the blued back lights in this way. Go to Image > Adjustment > Brightness/Contrast and adjust the brightness. And also, layer modes is extremely helpful in this step. Arranging the glow effect with Overlay, Color dodge or Soft light modes you can easily have more nice effects without this Brightness arrangements.
Step 32: And again like I did at the previous steps, arrange the lights as you see on this image. For extra brightness for the lights, you can use the Dodge Tool (O) Before using Dodge tool you must arrange the Range settings of the Dodge tool. Range: determines which pixels will be affected, and is probably the most important and most often neglected setting. Here make the Range setting as I did.
Step 33: Now it is time for little details for the background wall. At this step I have opened a new layer with the name of “Snow shapes” On the next step I’m going to show you how I draw those flower shapes. Here is the snow shape I choose from the Custom Shapes panel. Firstly choose Custom Shapes Tool (U). And draw lots of Snow shapes as I did and arrange the Layer mode to Soft light.
Well, now it is time to close the Photoshop. As I have explained I used some standard brushes only. Here this is the final illustration. I hope my tutorial has helped you and provided you with inspiration for your own digital painting. I also hope you enjoyed reading it! Thanks and goodbye.
