Step 13: When adding color and details, I worked through the image section by section, painting the character face, clothing one by one. In this step I switched to a smaller brush and increased the hardness all the way up. I created a few color swatches for the skin tones of the Santa and started to lay down some color, I decided to go with a grey and white hair color for the Santa. Here I show you my brushes about his clothing. I just use standard brushes and I see those ones are great for our character. For his dark belt I use another brush.
Step 14: With using my main brush I added some light and shadow as well. See those soft brushes for this effect. Using the hard edge brush at about 50% opacity I lay down some highlights and darken the shadowed areas of his red jacket. As I continue this process I am constantly sampling the shades that appear in-between the darker and lighter tones due to how mush pressure I am putting on the pen.
Step 15: Now it is time to add details for the character face. Next step is to choose a medium color/shade to begin giving the face shape. in this step the most important thing is to define the lights and shades, it is not necessary the tediousness in the future this layer won’t be seen. it is a stage to have a good time and to experience with the tones. Here I used this color for the face, Find the areas of the head that is touched by light. To give a little more depth of color and form I edged the color from the step previous with a slightly darker and more saturated one.
Step 16: I am still using the standard brush. I was going for a more fine smooth look for my character hair so I still use this thick brush. it is time to ass some more shading. This is the first layer and should cover all shadows. in Photoshop I’d use a normal hard brush with pressure sensitive opacity.
Step 17: I spent some time smoothing out the his clothing and features. His hair was refined by first blocking in the strands with a medium soft round brush and then adding in the details with a smaller hard round brushes with shape dynamics turned on. And as you see, some final refinement of the hair was done. I made those little hair details with a smaller hard round brush. On a single layer, character painting is done and it needs a little more details like lighting and darkness and contrast.
