Here I am going to explain the process of painting which I have called “Wild Deer and the Snow Vovered mountain Painting” In this tutorial you can learn how to color a sketch. For years I have been working hard to improve my skills on Photoshop. Today I thought I’d share some of the knowledge I have acquired over the years regarding the software. There are various techniques but this is the one I use and I hope you can easily learn how to color your own drawings.My tutorial will walk you step-by-step through digitally coloring in Adobe Phosotop CS3. I am sure that you can easily apply these techniques to your other projects.
For this tutorial I will be using these tools:
• Photoshop CS3
• Wacom Graphire 3 USB (Blue)
• A sketch of the main idea
Note: I’m using Adobe Photoshop. You can create a the same painting using digital art software, like Corel Painter or similar.

As some of you may know, I start out every illustration with a simple sketchwork with tablet on Photoshop. When I was drawing this sketch I have looked lots of real photos, like snow pictures and animal photos,wild deer photos and big snow mountains. İf you wish, you can draw with hand and then scan your sketches at about 300 DPI and import into Adobe PhotoshopCS3.
To draw a realistic animal, it is fundamental to have lots of reference photos. This will help you better understand the shape and the very essence of the animal. All those photographs help me visualize my Wild Deer in a snow covered forest.Okay, lets start. For whatever you are doing make sure your sketch is not on the background. I start drawing the sketch on a new layer. Of course it is also a good idea to have some reference of what kind of look you would like to achieve.
Step 1: To open a new file, go to the command File and then New. if you want you can also use the hot key Ctrl+N on Windows . (Ctrl+N or File > New).. When you choose “New” from the dropdown box. You will see the New Document dialog box. In the dialog box enter the width and height of your layout. Here these are my settings.
* Width: 900px
* Height: 1027px
* Resolution: 300.
And then click OK. Name you file and Save the document [File > Save]. As you know Photoshop files have the extension .psd. You can maybe name it “snowy mountains.psd”.
Step 2: When you click OK, you willl se a new Photoshop document/ canvas will be created with a locked Background layer in the ‘Layers Palette’. Check out the layer Palette. A new Photoshop document/ canvas will be created with a locked Background layer in the ‘Layers Palette’. If you can’t see the Layers palette then it is invisible so go to Windows -> show layers.
Step 3: Now at this step, you know how to open Layers Palette…in a word:
1 – Select “Windows”
2 – Select “Layers”
As you see, when we open an existing file or when we create a brand new one, the canvas in front of us shows on its own layer. Generally this layer is already named background and we can see it in the layers palette on the right hand side of the program. Okay lets create a new layer (Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+N). You can create empty layer for your painting. I‘ll show you how I open a new layer. To create empty layer, click on the create a new layer button.
Step 4: To give the layer a name, you double-click on the layer label in the layers palette. The label will then turn into text box for you to enter a new name. Name your layer with a different name.
